Nothing More #theɥʇnɹʇ Tour
The Belasco Theater
Los Angeles, Ca
Feb 22, 2019
First it must be said the staff at The Belasco was on point, entered with no issues. Passes and ticket where waiting for MA entertainment, appreciate that…
Before anything is ever written, the show is generally digested in order to objectively comment on what was witnessed. It is far too easy to report via the knee jerk reaction, then again even after days, the opinion will not go away… Negative or positively for that matter.
Thankfully Spotify allows an otherwise underwhelming opening act shine a bit more in the studio. The band Palisades, out of New Jersey, was typical of today's “metal” bands. The “I just got off of work, from the Old Navy look,” the screaming, the ethereal vocals with backing tracks, etc etc… That being said I was pretty much alone in my opinion, because the crowd came ready to rock and they soaked it all in!!! I played their December release “Erase the Pain” while writing this… It’s good background music... Played through two times...
Up next was Los Angeles’ very own Hyro the Hero one of the most energetic performers that I have seen in a long time. Hyro’s persona on stage reminds me of System Of A Down’s Daron in their Sunset Strip days… Erratic, explosive, never know what is going to come out of his mouth, non-apologetic stage antics. His band has become a well-oiled machine, prepared to play in front of a club, on a ship, or in front of thousands on a hot dust filled festival day in Autumn. After Palisades got the crowd going, Hyro turned the crowd up another notch or two, especially after jumping into the pit and nearly getting himself crushed. Hyro has a take no prisoner, no fear mentality and he demands the same from the crowd. Expect to hear from this artist for some time to come.
Main support for the headliners Nothing More, is a Billboard charting band who can headline their own tour anytime… Of Mice and Men… This fact was not lost on the crowd that they got two headliners for the price of one. With a revised line up supporting their 2018 release “Defy,” OMandM took the stage with a full stage show, to the enjoyment of all in attendance. The band have also taken on a far more traditional look in the world of metal, which obviously was noticed by this guy… Yeah, I know metal has no rules, but… Eight songs, almost was enough for this first timer seeing the band. They commanded the crowd and their instruments like seasoned pros. Stand out songs Unbreakable, O.G. Loko, and their latest single How to Survive demonstrated their diverse music styles throughout their career. Will need to see these guys again.
San Antonio, Texas’ own Nothing More are just beginning the end of this tour cycle for their 2017 award winning “The Stories We Tell Ourselves.” They have rocked the music world for some time now and if the crowd was any indication of the continued bright future this band has, the next release should do just as well. I eagerly awaited the shows mechanical counterpart; however, I was treated with the air raid siren to kick off the show and the white current drop. These guys have their show down to a science, from their light show, fans, and atmospheric vibe. The band runs at full throttle from the air raid siren to the final notes of their 17th song Salem (Burn the Witch) when the band goes all percussive for a bit. Highlights were Jenny, Let ‘em Burn, Go to War, an award worthy cover of We Will Rock You, and of course Ocean Floor, which includes the “mechanical counterpart,” the ultimate effects pedal! Jonny and the crew put on one hell of an entertaining show… They cover a lot from their three-album history and it was obvious by the singing along by nearly every person on the floor and in the mezzanine that there were all real and deep stories being sung along too.
I am sure there is a whole story behind “the ɥʇnɹʇ tour” I am sure it is to bring awareness to everything from gun control, mental illness, free will, etc, however I want to just focus on the epic show that was. Feel free to research and delve deeper into the lyrics of Jonny Hawkins, most artist want the listener to develop their own opinions on what they hear… I will keep with that.
Thanks again to management and the bands for an amazing evening of music!
