DANNY WIMMER PRESENTS AFTERSHOCK FESTIVAL 2019
October 11, 12, & 13
This years’ festival had not even began before the buzz about the 2020 version began to be the talk of the town as the kings of metal, METALLICA, will be headlining 2 of the 3 days in 2020. In fact, the mighty Met have signed on to do 5 of the DANNY WIMMER PRESENTS Festivals in 2020. For those who were unsure about the future of Metallica with frontman JAMES HETFIELD currently in rehab, rest assured they would not sign on for something this large if they were not 100% confident in their return.
With the festival starting on Friday this year, parking in the nearby vicinity was a nightmare due to businesses who are closed on the weekend being open and creating a 2-mile walk for some people back to the venue. Then again, that beats paying $30 to pay to park. Also, this is an ideal time for those Uber and Lyft drivers to make a some extra cash by hanging out in this area for easy clients. The festival has long lines to enter, vendors throughout Discovery Park including MONSTER ENERGY, COORS LIGHT, F*CK CANCER, RONZWORLD, BLACKENED, ZIPPO, and a myriad of other lifestyle vendors including the most popular, those who support the cannabis/marijuana movement with big sponsor KOLAS who are the 2nd main stage sponsor and have their own section blocked off for those over 21 who partake in the green. While I do not partake, there were plenty who do and for those who are sensitive to smoke, from any substance, a facemask might be a good option especially as some of the punters were smoking cigars at Aftershock, ugh!
But to focus on 2019 Day One brought the heat with headliners SLIPKNOT, as well as other heavy hitters like LAMB OF GOD, MOTIONLESS IN WHITE, STAIND, HALESTORM, BEARTOOTH, I PREVAIL, DROPKICK MURPHYS, CLUTCH, (we should have had HATEBREED since they’re on tour with Clutch and Dropkicks), but the overall highlight for me today was seeing PHILIP H. ANSELMO & THE ILLEGALS do an awesome set of PANTERA songs to celebrate the lives of the fallen ABBOTT brothers, VINNIE and DIME. The crowd as 2:00 was fully charged and supporting the respect. And while many people doubt or questions the words or actions of Philip, it’s apparent that he is more clearly thinking today in that he did not have the five-minute rants on stage, he delivered a focused set and chewed gum while singing today. The songs were as expected, or maybe not as expected seeing as some of the obvious were played, WALK, STRONGER THAN ALL, MOUTH FOR WAR, yet some obvious were omitted in this short set today like, COWBOYS FROM HELL and CEMETERY GATES, in favor of a track like YESTERDAY DON’T MEAN SHIT. This was an absolute highlight today that gave me chills in the sunlight! Another standout today were HALESTORM as SiriusXM host JOSE MANGIN was on hand to lead a round of Happy Birthday to Halestorm leader, LZZY HALE. Halestorm delivered a set of their hits and proudly proclaimed on stage, “we play all of our own instruments” and whether taking a jab at those who don’t or just making it known that Halestorm is a ‘live’ band, I love bands that bring it on stage with their amps and drums.
To be continued…..after Day Two
